Resumen

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation, usually progressive. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation is an alternative treatment for patients with COPD exacerbation. NIV consists of applying positive pressure to the airways during inspiration and/or expiration. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of NIV use in patients with COPD admitted to the ICU. An exploratory literature review of studies already published between the years 2004 and 2021 was carried out in the relevant scientific literature databases, using search tools for scientific works such as Pubmed, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciElo), World Organization of Health, Ministry of Health. Data were found that the use of NIV in COPD patients demonstrated benefits in relation to its use, such as improved gas exchange, reduced respiratory muscle fatigue, decreased hospital stay and mortality. So we conclude that NIV is linked to positive results with its use in COPD patients with improved clinical status and quality of life.
